Earth Eclectic Is Just Getting Warmed Up

There’s a warm feeling I get when I hear a certain kind of music.

It’s the sort of music we feature on the Earth Eclectic radio hour. It’s music that aims to honor Earth, this sacred context from which we emerge and to which we return. These are love songs, but not so much about the typical romantic two-person dyad that tends to dominate the pop charts. It’s a more expansive, all-inclusive love. Sometimes it spreads its wings to embrace the cosmos, but it more frequently celebrates the immediate and visceral experience of life in this planetary being: the soil beneath our feet, the water in which we swim, the very air that we breathe — to say nothing of the fiery passions, fanned into raging flames as we see what’s at stake in our current political moment.

At 85 episodes (and counting) we are just getting warmed up. Thanks to our partnership with the Gaian Way, Earth Eclectic has a new website, and we are making a concerted effort to reach out to new radio stations.

Inspired by Host Laura Dedelow’s encounter with a wounded crow, episode 0084 pays tribute to crows, ravens, magpies, and other birds in the Corvidae family. Join us as we explore a sound-rich, corvid-based set of tracks, within the genres of spoken word, singer-songwriter, pagan metal, progressive folk, Celtic, alternative and more.

Yes, yes, yes, we’ve been on the internet since our debut on Earth Day of 2024. That’s great, as it means we can be heard globally. However, that global accessibility is also strangely limiting. Our little show is easily lost amid vast volumes of content. Anyone who goes out looking for ecospiritual music might be able to find us — we certainly hope so! — but not many people are aware that such music even exists, as a category, as a mushrooming body of work.

In fact, we strongly suspect that the people who need to hear this music the most are exactly the people who would never actively seek it out. Therefore, our mission from day one has always been to broadcast on the airwaves. We want to reach the ears of random channel surfers. We’re grateful to WHIV 102.3 FM in New Orleans for providing our home base, but this low-power FM station only gets us so far. When you hear this music, when you feel its power to energize and even to heal, then you know it needs to be heard more widely.

That’s where we could use your help. Do you have any connection to your local community radio station? Reach out to us at info@eartheclectic.org and help us reach out to them.

In episode 0083, host Bart Everson shares “The Joy of Biodiversity,” a collection of music that celebrates the magnificent tapestry of life on our planet. With music from Peter Mayer, Siri, Gowan Ring, Channelers, Terralgia, and Reverend Billy, each artist offers a unique perspectives on our relationship with the more-than-human world. The journey concludes with Sharon Burch’s 1984 Navajo-language classic “Mother Earth,” a reminder that Indigenous wisdom has long recognized what science now confirms—that biodiversity is not merely beautiful, but essential to human flourishing.
